Issues covered include: legal; financial; taxation; new technologies; globalisation; competition; insurance and risk management; industrial relations; networking; education and training; and information and assistance. On completion of the unit students should be able to demonstrate: an understanding of the major issues impacting on small business; decision making factors that support the small business environment; the considerations needed for effective small business planning; and an enthusiasm for entrepreneurship and self-employment. In addition to the provision of many references, most on various websites throughout the world, a context and background for the issues is provided by Rolffe Peacock, Understanding Small Business: Practice, Theory and Research (2004). PROVIDED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIAThe unit is managed by the University of South Australia (Division of Business and Enterprise, City West Campus) which provides a lecturer-in-charge. But it is implemented by Open Universities Australia to whom all queries should be addressed for enrolment. The unit has been established for everyone interested in small business and is not restricted to university or TAFE students. There are no prerequisites and it is hoped that participants will subsequently undertake further enterprise and entrepreneurship studies at the University of South Australia, at other universities and TAFE which offer suitable units of study, or via Open Learning Australia. Because the unit is taught substantially online, students need to provide an email address and have access to a computer with a recent version of Internet Explorer (or Netscape for Mac users). The unit is available in four study periods each year and runs for 13 weeks. HOW TO ENROLGo to www.ola.edu.au/ to check out more information, enrolment dates and the enrolment fee. Then enrol online.
